GATE 2015 ME (1st February 2015) forenoon session analysis

The analysis of the paper is as follows:

  • Engineering Mathematics section had 9 questions in total, with questions from calculus, vector calculus, numerical integration, Laplace transforms, differential equations, probability, matrices.Total weight-age of this  section was 13 marks.
  • Engineering Mechanics had 1 question in total.
  • Strength of Material had 8 questions in total, with a weight-age of 13 marks in total. The topics covered were slope & deflection, bending moment and shear force diagram, shafts, principal stresses, analysis of frames and trusses, cylindrical and spherical shells.
  • Machine Design had 4 questions in total, with a weight-age of 6 marks in total. The topics covered were shafts, gears, gear trains.
  • Theory of Machines had 3 questions in total, with a weight-age of 5 marks in total.
  • Mechanical Vibrations had 3 questions in total, with a weight-age of 3 marks in total.
  • Fluid mechanics had 5 questions in total, with a weight-age of 7 marks in total. The topics covered were kinematics of fluid flow, flow through pipes.
  • Thermodynamics had 7 questions in total, with a weight-age of 11 marks in total. The topics covered were SFEE, entropy and entropy change, power cycles (Rankine, Reheat), IC engines.
  • Heat transfer had 3 questions in total, with a weight-age of 5 marks in total.
  • Manufacturing Engineering had 7 questions in total, with a weight-age of 12 marks in total. The topics covered were metal forming, machining, non-conventional machining, welding, Group technology.
  • Industrial Engineering had 5 questions in total, with a weight-age of 7 marks. The topics covered were PERT/CPM, regression analysis, inventory control and inventory model.
From the above data, the analysis is as given below:
  • Topics which were of highest importance, Engineering Mathematics (13%), Thermodynamics (17% of technical section), Strength of Materials (20% of the technical section) and Manufacturing Engineering (18.5% of the technical section). Which means, almost 50% of the technical section was from Thermodynamics, SOM and Manufacturing Engineering.
  • There was NO question from the topic of Material Science, this doesn't mean there will be no question from it in the next year's exam too!!
  • More emphasis was given to the verbal section in the General Aptitude section, i..e 60% of the GA section was from Verbal.
  • More than 50%, i.e. almost 55% questions were of two marks, which makes practicing and learning how to strategize during the MOCK tests, all the more important!
